Synology vs Ugreen 2026: Which NAS Actually Wins?
Synology dominated the home NAS market for 15 years. The 2024 drama with third-party drive restrictions opened the door, and Ugreen grew massively in 2025. Here's the honest 2026 comparison.
Short version
Synology: best software (DSM), worse hardware price-performance, restrictive drive policy. Ugreen: best hardware price-performance, software (UGOS Pro) still trails, free drive choice. For tech-savvy users with container needs: Ugreen. For plug-and-play family/office: still Synology, mind drive compatibility.
Hardware comparison (4-bay models)
Synology DS923+: AMD Ryzen R1600, 4 GB DDR4 ECC, 1× 1 GbE + 2× 1 GbE LAN, M.2 NVMe slots. ~$530.
Ugreen DXP4800 Plus: Intel Pentium Gold 8505, 8 GB DDR5, 1× 10 GbE + 1× 2.5 GbE, 2× M.2 NVMe. ~$580.
Ugreen has 2× RAM, 10 GbE instead of 1 GbE, newer CPU – for $50 more. Synology has the ECC-RAM advantage and longer hardware lifecycle (software updates 7+ years).
Software comparison
DSM (Synology): 15+ years mature. Excellent apps (Photos, Drive, Surveillance Station, Hyper Backup). Container Manager (Docker), VMs via VMM. Frequent updates, very stable.
UGOS Pro (Ugreen): noticeably better since 2024. Apps: Photos, Files, Surveillance, Backup. Docker integrated, snapshots available. No VMM equivalent. Software at 80-85% of DSM level.
Drive choice 2026
This is what Synology broke: from 2025 DS-Plus models, third-party drives often get warnings, some features (M.2 as Storage Pool) require Synology SSDs. More drama in the NAS buying guide.
Ugreen: all CMR NAS drives without restriction, all M.2 NVMe without brand lock.
Price-performance over 5 years
- Synology DS923+ + 4× 8 TB Synology HAT3300: 530 + 4×170 = $1210. Synology warranty.
- Synology DS923+ + 4× 8 TB WD Red Plus: 530 + 4×165 = $1190. Third-party drives allowed with warning.
- Ugreen DXP4800 Plus + 4× 8 TB WD Red Plus: 580 + 4×165 = $1240. Plus 10 GbE built in.
Similar pricing. Ugreen has better connectivity, Synology has software maturity.
When Synology still makes sense
- Family setup, plug-and-play matters
- Time Machine, Photos backup, Surveillance Station out of the box
- Willing to buy Synology drives (or pre-2025 DS-Plus models)
- Long software lifespan
When Ugreen is the better pick
- Tech-savvy, want Docker / self-hosting
- 10 GbE network present or planned
- Want drive freedom without vendor restriction
- Price-performance matters more than software maturity
When other options are better
QNAP TS-464: middle path. Hardware similar to Ugreen, software (QTS) more mature but UI not as smooth as DSM. ~$550.
Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen3: ECC RAM (rare at this price), for ZFS lovers. ~$700.
DIY TrueNAS / Unraid: max flexibility for those not afraid of Linux/CLI.
Recommendation
Classic plug-and-play home NAS: Synology DS923+ if you can live with the drive policy, otherwise Ugreen DXP4800 Plus. Tech enthusiasts: Ugreen or QNAP. Power users: DIY.
